CHAPTER NINE

Olivia and Jake made the quick drive to the floral shop. The owner was there and she was more than willing to answer their questions. She didn’t remember Leslie being in the shop, but she did look through her orders. She verified that Leslie had purchased a bouquet of carnations using a credit card.

Jake asked the owner if she remembered anyone else being in the shop that day, but the woman just shrugged. The shop had a security camera, but it only kept footage for three days. It would be useless for their case. When they stepped outside, Olivia said she wanted to see the park where Karli’s body had been found. Jake agreed that it might be helpful and they headed back to his car.

“Liv, can I ask you something personal?” Jake said as they were pulling away.

“Sure. I can’t guarantee I will answer it,” Olivia said with a wry smile.

“Fair enough.” Jake shot her a shy smile. “Do you ever wish that you’d chosen a different profession? Especially now that you have kids?”

Olivia immediately said, “No. Maybe I’m crazy, but I like my work. It’s not always pretty or easy to digest, but it’s important. I know that the work I do helps save lives. Not everyone can say that.”

“Do you wish that your husband had a different job? I know firsthand how hard it can be to love someone that constantly has their focus on the things no one should ever have to see,” Jake said.

“Nate and I met when we were eighteen. I know what he was like before he became a homicide detective and the job hasn’t changed him much. He has moments when it wears on him, but he’s always been pretty good at compartmentalizing the job. Honestly, I think the kids help with that.” Olivia frowned when she remembered what Nate had said about potentially wanting to quit his job in the future. “I don’t know how sustainable it is. I know that it’s wearing on him more than it used to. Why do you ask?”

“It just seems like the two of you have this perfect marriage. Neither of my marriages was ever like that, even in the best of times.” He gave me a sheepish look. “Both wives blamed the job as the main reason why it didn’t work and I guess I’m just trying to figure out if it was actually me to blame.”

Olivia nodded. “I see. Well, I’m not sure Nate will like that I’m sharing this with you, but his first wife also blamed the job. It wasn’t until a long time after their divorce that they both realized it had nothing to do with the job and everything to do with being with the wrong person. I’m sure that’s also true for you.”

“Are you saying there is still hope for me?” Jake asked with a laugh.

“You’re not terminal,” Olivia said.

“What’s it like having kids? How do you keep all the dark stuff from them?” Jake asked.

Olivia considered his question.
